Wedit: Film-it-Yourself Videography

Whether you are on a tight budget and on the fence about hiring a professional videographer, or if you have your videographer booked for wedding day but are afraid you are going to miss other memories during your long weekend affair: Don’t fret—Amarvelous Event has you covered! In this post, we’ll talk about Wedit—an alternative to wedding videography—as well as how it works, the pricing, and why this could be a great option for you!

I am a strong believer that you would regret not having video coverage of your big day. You may not watch the video often, but it will be something down the road you may want to have. Maybe you’ll take it out annually to watch on your anniversary, or maybe you’ll show it to your future children. We had family, friends, and coworkers who couldn’t make it to our wedding but watched our 10-minute video reel and loved the opportunity to see our special day. Whatever your reason, don’t regret not having video coverage.

How Wedit Works

Wedit is a system that allows you to cover videography of your entire wedding weekend without a videographer on site. Wait… What?!? You read that correctly. The reason why Wedit is so extremely affordable is because you aren’t paying the salary for someone to be on site at your event all day.

Steps:

Select your package.
The Wednesday before your event, Wedit mails you five HD iPod Touches in the mail.
Pick five people you are going to assign cameras to for the entire weekend (bridesmaids and groomsmen would be killer at this job), or you can distribute the job to as many people as you like throughout the weekend. Maybe a different person each day for each camera.
Go crazy and take as much footage as you like! Each camera holds up to four hours of HD footage, so you may want to stagger who is filming during which hours.
Mail back the cameras by the Tuesday after the wedding.

Editing:

You aren’t only limited to the video content from the five Wedit cameras. You can also send Wedit other footage that you recorded, and the editors can add it into the final product.
You are not limited to Wedit editors either. You can also edit the content yourself or use a third-party editor.
If you selected an editing package through Wedit, then fill out the editing preference form and Wedit’s editing team uses your choices to create a professionally edited video that you will love.
Edited videos take about four to six weeks to receive.
After your video is edited, it will be uploaded directly to your Wedit account.
Should you want small changes, the editors will do one round of small changes.
Once you approve your edit, then you will be sent the final video on a USB to keep.

Rights:

Your footage is available online a whole year for viewing, download, and sharing. You own the rights to everything you capture and can use the footage as you like.
Remember to download all the files to your computer before the year is up!

Cost

I think the main reason people choose not to do videography is due to funds. Photographers and videographers are costly because you are not just hiring staff for event day—They are on-site for eight to twelve hours, capturing the memories, then their job continues after the event as they begin editing the content that they captured! Plus, you are left with tangible photographs and videos that last a lifetime. Of course, photographers and videographers tend to be the priciest vendor.

Wedit Has Thought of Everything

Wedit does not require signature for its packages when they arrive. This is awesome, because you will be running left and right during the days before your wedding, finishing last-minute tasks, spending time with family, and having salon treatments. No one has time to wait around for packages!
Wedit only ships cameras to the US. However, if your event is out of the country and you or a guest are traveling from the US to get there, then Wedit can mail the cameras to you before you leave. Canadians can contact customer service for other delivery options.
If the Wednesday through Tuesday timeline doesn’t work for your needs, then let Wedit know and they can add days, thus allowing you to capture all the moments.
The cameras have built-in flash and microphones, so get ready to rock those vows and dance floor reception pics.
The cameras allow you to zoom, but Wedit recommends you not zoom as it compromises the quality of the footage. Their editors are able to zoom in on the regular footage without creating a granular look. Just let them know what parts you would prefer closer-up. Gee… thanks, Wedit! You think of everything!
Wedit covers general wear-and-tear on the iPods. By signing the contract, you acknowledge that you are responsible for replacement if the iPod is lost or damaged.
The $50 that you pay to reserve the date is non-refundable. If you cancel before 60 days of your event, you will be issued a partial refund. If you cancel within 60 days of your event, you are not issued a refund.

Zola: The Unconventional Wedding Registry

Who doesn’t love gifts—am I right?! Well, get excited, because as soon as you pick a wedding date, you can begin the super fun task of setting up your wedding registry. This post is going to focus specifically on Zola registries: what makes a Zola registry unconventional, why it could be a great fit for you, and the options available to pick from. After you finish reading, you’ll be ready for your online shopping to begin!

I’ll begin by saying that if you are on the fence about registering at all, then think again. Your wedding and the parties leading up to that special day are going to be moments of celebration! People who can afford to will want to shower you with gifts. A registry is a helpful tool that will guide your guests to understand items you need and want. It will also give guests a glimpse into your general style. Should they “go rogue” and buy something not on the registry, at least it will match the rest of your home. Don’t leave people in the dark, or you might be gifted a lot of vases, picture frames, and candles. Nothing wrong with those items, but if you received eight vases, then you may regret not having registered.

Maybe you don’t want or need as many actual possessions like formal china. Nowadays, many couples are already living together and have some of the items they want for their home. Instead of home goods, think alternatively and ask for these offerings:
- Gift cards: Register for newlywed date-night gift cards, or Lowe’s or Home Depot to begin your home improvements, or Petco or Petsmart so your pet can also be pampered. There are SO MANY gift card options to chose from. You can’t go wrong.
- Experiences: You can add monthly subscriptions for wine, cheese, or coffee, sign up for meal-planning dinners such as offered by Blue Apron, take cooking classes, or even go on a dinner cruise date-night. There are too many options to list, but you get the idea.

Honeymoon funds: The sky is the limit with this one. First, decide where you want to honeymoon (and be sure to read our post on How to Plan an Epic Honeymoon!), then create gifts for airfare, hotel, dinners, and entertainment. If you went a little overboard with the wedding and forgot to budget for the honeymoon, you can still go on the trip of your dreams! Plus, people will LOVE buying you a special honeymoon experience you will cherish forever.

FREE wedding website: Yes, you read that correctly. Zola gives you access to create a free wedding website. Guests may misplace or lose the invite that you mailed them, but they’ll still be able to visit your convenient website where they can reference all your wedding information. You could do a website on your own, but you will have to pay for the domain and hosting.

5-star user-friendly app: Seriously, this app is awesome! You can add gifts, track gifts that were purchased, and work on your website right from the app!

The lowest cash fund fees around at 2.5%: Some items can be purchased directly from Zola just like on department store websites. However, when asking for items that can’t be purchased in a store, Zola works more like a cash fund. People see the gift is $100, they buy it, and the money gets rolled into your Zola cash fund. Whenever you like, you can deposit those funds directly into your bank account. Zola charges a 2.5% fee, but that is a lower cost compared to what other companies charge for the same service. Also, knowing they subtract 2.5% off your gift, Zola offers the option of just adding 2.5% extra on top of every gift you list. That way, the guest is paying 100% for your gift, and you aren’t paying out-of-pocket.

Contribute-what-you-wish payment options: This is so neat. On Zola, you can request really pricey gifts like vacations and furniture. This payment option allows you to specify which gifts can be split, meaning multiple guests can chip in and pay what they want towards the item until it’s 100% purchased. One of our most expensive gifts was a six-day cruise through Asia (read about it here!), and four of our wedding guests chipped in and purchased it for us.

Guest list assistance: Zola gives you a place to collect addresses and track your RSVPs.

Wedding checklist: Zola provides you with suggested to-do items as well as lets you fill in your own to create one master list. If you have downloaded the Zola app, your phone will push notifications when it’s time for that to-do item to be done.

Invitation and save-the-date: Zola offers options that can be designed right from their website to match your Zola wedding website. They also offer free guest addressing and shipping!

Gift Options to Pick From

Zola covers all the essential wedding registry categories and then some: kitchen, tabletop, bed & bath, furniture, home, weekend, experiences & gift cards, and cash funds!

For our wedding registry, we used both Macy’s for regular household items (I loved the Macy’s brand Hotel Collection), then we used Zola for things that Macy’s didn’t offer and our honeymoon. We did both Macy’s and Zola because we had a Macy’s credit card, and they offered great bonuses and free gifts. In the end, you have to weigh out all the options and decide what registry or registries are best for you. It is okay to have more than one, just make finding them convenient: put links for both registries on your wedding website, and then people will know they have options.

We took a six-week honeymoon around the world to London, China, Hong Kong, Thailand, and Japan (you can read about these destinations on the Amarvelous Honeymoon blog). Without adding honeymoon activities onto our Zola registry, we definitely wouldn’t have been able to do as much or stay away for so long. In the end, the only thing I may have done differently with our registry was select more honeymoon items for our Zola. Of course, we cherish, enjoy, and use the household items that we received, but the memories that we made while on that trip were so special. Plus, we were able to share those experiences with our guests by posting daily on social media and tagging them. An example of this was the day we visited elephants in Thailand. We tagged the few people who chipped in on that gift. It felt good to show our friends and family how much joy their gift had brought us.

The only negative I have for Zola is their new slogan “Registry and wedding planning made easy.” Their new commercial has two friends talking over coffee. One says, “Your wedding was so perfect, how did you do it?” And the other simply responds, “Zola.” Although Zola is an excellent one-stop-registry-shop and included wedding website, I don’t think that having a Zola registry means your entire wedding is planned. Their new campaign is a bit misleading, because you will still need to hire wedding professionals to ensure your vision comes to life. But it’s true that Zola can help organize you in the early stages.

A Game of Thrones Inspired Wedding

We are in the final season of Game of Thrones, and it’s all everyone is talking about. So, this seems like the opportune moment to discuss how to plan a Game of Thrones inspired wedding/event. In this post, we’ll discuss how to plan a themed party and then go into specific elements such as attire, hair and makeup, décor, florals, place settings, food, paper goods, and ceremonial elements that you can add to your affair to give it that fantasy theme immersion your guests will be wowed over.

First, let’s discuss how to plan a themed affair. You have two options. You could go very literally and include actual elements from the inspiration. Example, a Beauty and the Beast theme with table centerpieces of character figurines such as Mrs. Pots, Chip, and Cogsworth. This is kitschy, but the theme is so literal that there is no way someone would think it was anything else. Otherwise, you could include subtle elements that give the feel of the theme without being too kitschy. Example, a Beauty and the Beast theme with a ballgown wedding dress, suits with tails, red roses, candelabra centerpieces, and gold accents. Nothing specifically screams Beauty and the Beast, but the feel is regal, princess, and tale as old as time. In the end, you have to decide the formality of the event and which theme style works best for you.

Below are specific elements you could include to both capture your Game of Thrones theme in subtle and unsubtle ways.

Attire

Medieval Design Dress: Throughout the seasons, the women in Game of Thrones are really on point with their outfits. Yes, they all had their ups and downs as characters, so for your inspiration focus on clothing choices from the good seasons of Margaery, Daenerys, Sansa, and Cersei. Depending on the season and if the character lives in the North or the South, there is inspiration for summer and winter weddings. Don’t be afraid to rock a detachable cape like Dani. Even consider going with an off-white shade. There are beautiful champagne and light grey dresses that would fit the theme.

Deep Romantic Colors: For a winter wedding, bridesmaids in deep hues of red, green, purple, and blue are very regal. Red hues remind me of Melisandre the Red Priestess. Long sleeve and velvet dresses are both in right now.

Floral: For a summer wedding, you could go totally opposite with flowing floral dresses. This would bring a whimsical feel of Westeros.

White on White: You could even go all white walker on everyone and have a full white-on-white bridal party and couple.

Fur: If your wedding is in the winter, consider fur elements. The groom or groomsmen could wear fur over their shoulders like Jon Snow. The bride could wear a fur shoulder wrap. Bridesmaids could use fur hand muffs. You could even work in fur into centerpieces. Ikea sells reasonably priced swaths of white fur.

Maid of Honor and Best Man: Hand to the “King” or “Queen” pins would be the perfect gift for your best man or maid of honor. Or you could give all the men this pin and do without floral boutonnieres.

Cuff links: Direwolf, house crest, dragon, or dragon egg cuff links are also a really small way to be right on theme. They would make great detail photography shots.

Hair and Makeup

Crown: Nothing says royalty more than a crown, and Game of Thrones has some really fun ones! Think more earthy than Disney princess. You would want a Game of Thrones crown to have branches, flowers, or antlers. It’s not as much about the bedazzling as much as just metal.

Romantic Braided Hair: Nearly every female character in Game of Thrones had a braid at one time or another. Some characters’ hair is even intertwined with multiple braids. A half-up-half-down braided hairstyle with romantic curls is the way to go.

Décor

Mood Lighting: Lighting is something that can change the whole look of your space. Darker rooms with romantic mood lighting from candles make sense for the medieval time period. Ask your venue to dim the lights. Add in some up-lighting around the room. If your venue is set up to pin-light your centerpieces, even better! If not, add a ton of candles to each table. You’ll get a romantic glow.

Earthy Design: Overall, a Game of Thrones theme should have an earthy and natural look. You could use naked wood tables and chairs without linens or padding. Also consider the dimensions of the tables. Long rectangular tables are way more Game of Thrones-esque than large rounds.

Throne: Think next-level sweetheart table. Instead of regular chairs or a modern loveseat sofa, rent grand seats fit for royalty. Individual seats with tall backs will do the trick. They can be solid wood or have embellished padding and carved accents.

Dragon Eggs or Swords: The Mother of Dragons and King of the North can’t possibly get married without a little dragon egg and sword action, but you can. Haha! If having some dragon eggs and swords out in the open is too much for you, then I would suggest you still have them on hand for some fun portrait photos. You could even garnish a photo booth or portrait station with props from the show so guests themselves can take themed photos.

Florals

Wild Flowers: Wild flower arrangements will look more organic and hand-picked. You can achieve a formal wild flower look by keeping to certain color schemes. Wild flowers don’t have to be rainbow. Also think smaller arrangements. Over the years, bridal bouquets have become a statement floral piece in the wedding, and the bigger the better. Ever notice how small royal bridal bouquets are in England? Smaller than an American bridesmaids’ arrangement. It’s because the flowers aren’t meant to be the star of the show.

Moss: To me, nothing says woodsy and fantasy more than floral arrangements with green moss. Even moss and candles are very ethereal.

Babies’ Breath: This delicate flower could be utilized as small bouquets, centerpieces, or even as a hair accessory. It’s insanely affordable and goes along with the theme.

Pine Cones: Metallic painted pine cones will have a similar look to a dragon’s egg. Both mini and large pine cones could be used in centerpieces, bouquets, and even boutonnieres. Use floral wire to attach them into the arrangements.

Place Setting

Goblets: Stick to goblets over more modern sleek styles of glassware.

Flatware: If you’ve ever been to a Medieval Times Dinner and Tournament restaurant, then you know that they don’t provide utensils. Your wedding guests would still appreciate them though. If your accent color is gold, ask your venue if they offer gold. If your venue only has ornately decorated flatware, then consider renting. The beauty of this theme is that it was simple back then, so you can get away with one large fork, one knife, a soup spoon, and a teaspoon.

Linens: Tablecloths and napkins in an organic linen material will be natural and yet can still be accentuated with metallic accents for a timeless look. Naked tables with a table runner branded with the house crest would be awesome!

Food

Menu: Mmmmm! At Medieval Times Dinner and Tournament, the “noble guests” feast on garlic bread, tomato bisque soup, roasted chicken, sweet buttered corn, herb-basted potatoes, and dessert of the Castle. For your event’s starter, ditch the salad and start off with a hearty soup. For the main course, think meat on the bone, such as a quarter chicken, pork chops, lamb chops, or rib eye steak. For side dishes, serve roasted seasoned vegetables or a puff pastry wrapped vegetable. Accompany your meal with slices of bread, rolls, or even cater in Direwolf breads. Avoid the single wrapped butters and go for family style spreads instead. Finish off the dinner with your wedding cake or other dessert (maybe pie?).

Signature Drink/Alcohols: Have some fun with signature drink color and name. This is your time to come up with a clever drink that relates back to Game of Thrones. Or if you can’t think of anything witty, then a quick internet search will give you some great ideas. You may also consider serving a mead. Don’t forget Cersei and her love affair with wine!

Serving: You can either serve food family style on beautiful platters or serve single plated portions. If your venue can accommodate table side family style, that would go along with the theme well. However, buffet style veers farther away from your theme than the other two options.

Dragon Scale Print: Dragon scales are similar to fish scales, just a bit more pointy. I could see this print subtly stroked into butter creme on a tier of the wedding cake or desserts.

Paper Goods

Bridal Party Cards: There are many options to select from on Etsy, but these “Every king needs a hand… Will you be mine?” cards and pins are sweet!

Wax Seal: You can create custom stamps with a family crest, or use a pre-made one with natural element, or even the actual Direwolf Game of Thrones Stark family crest stamp. Wax seals will potentially increase the weight of your card and require additional postage, but they are an old-world touch.

Paper: if you can choose, pick an off-white shade of paper or something with natural texture in it. Paper that is too bleached and processed wouldn’t have been found in Westeros!

Language: “Winter is coming” has been a heavily used phrase for the show. Should your event be taking place in the winter season, consider working in this language into your save the date. “He bent the knee” would also be cute as a save the date.

Font: Download the Game of Thrones font and use that font in your paper goods.

Monogram: Create a new monogram house crest that you can work through all paper goods. You could even print or hand paint a banner to hang at the ceremony or entry to the door of your reception.

Cake Topper: Since you’ve already created your own house crest, why not brand your cake with your new house? Custom cake toppers allow you to rep your house. “House Amar”

Ceremonial

Hand-Fasting Ceremony: An ancient Celtic tradition, symbolizing the binding together of two people. I don’t believe this was specifically in Game of Thrones, but it is something nontraditional that you could add to your ceremony that would make it stand out from everyone else’s wedding. It’s also a beautiful sentiment.

Wine Ceremony: I see this as a new take to the candle or sand ceremonies. I love this idea of blending together two types of wines then each person offers their soon to be spouses a sip of the newly combined wine. By using a vessel and two goblets you will give it that medieval flare.

There are certainly many creative whimsical elements you could add to your big day to achieve your Game of Thrones theme. Just to recap, decide if you want to play the theme literally or subtly. Once you decide that, then move on to the small details: attire, hair and makeup, décor, florals, place settings, food, paper goods, and ceremonial elements. You don’t have to be a master crafter either. There are wonderful Game of Thrones offerings on Etsy that would excite any fan of the show. If you combine enough of the ideas above, your guest will be immersed and feel as though you have transported them right into the Seven Kingdoms.
